Comprehensive Workers' Comp Program Saves Manufacturing Company Money

A strong management team was leaving claims to the insurance company. One stale claim was adding seven points to the mod.

The business

Wood products manufacturer with more than 40 employees in three work classes: sash, door and assembly millwork, sales, and clerical. The company runs one shift, has a very stable workforce and consistently turns out a high quality product.

The situation

The company has a highly competent management team. Even so, the Risk Management and HR Assessment showed claims were being left to the insurance company to manage and close. Open claims were driving up the experience modifier and premium. One claim had no activity for over a year and was adding seven points to the mod. The company also had not been told how much a transitional duty program could matter.

What we found

We reviewed the loss runs ahead of the renewal and found open claims with no activity that could be closed before renewal. The company was sending injured workers home to recover instead of bringing them back on a transitional duty job.

What we did

We put in a risk management plan that included detailed procedures for returning an injured employee to work. We also helped the company follow up properly with the insurance companies to get claims closed.

The result

Over $15,000

Annual premium reduction

Because the plan showed the promise of much lower claim costs, the company became more attractive to other insurance companies. Being more insurable got it more services and better pricing, and its annual premium came down over $15,000. On one claim alone, the company saved more than $3,000 through better management.

Where the Employer Success Program comes in

It starts with a Diagnostic and Plan. We read your loss runs, your mod worksheet and your key contracts, and we talk with the people who run the work. You get the pattern behind your claims and a short list of what's worth fixing first.

From there our claims, HR, safety and fleet people work alongside yours, and you get a Score Card at the start and every year after, measured against your own starting point.
