The business

Trucking company.

The situation

A high rate, a high modifier and a large number of employee injuries had pushed premium to $800,000. Five years earlier it had been $340,000.

What we found

The Risk Management and HR Assessment quickly showed there was no return-to-work program. The claims analysis showed the employer what it really cost when the insurance company paid indemnity to injured employees.

What we did

After looking at return-to-work options, the company decided to stop outsourcing its security guard function and make it a transitional duty job. Injured workers sit in the booth and collect paperwork from incoming trucks. Another light duty job is scanning bar codes on boxes as they pass on a conveyor belt. With a chair on wheels, the employee simply sits and presses a button as each box goes by.

The result

$800,000 to $290,000

Premium over five years

On one case alone, self-insuring the transitional duty kept $14,000 in indemnity off the claim, which lowered premium by $68,000 over three years. Within three years premium was down to $440,000, and to $290,000 in five years.

Where the Employer Success Program comes in

It starts with a Diagnostic and Plan. We read your loss runs, your mod worksheet and your key contracts, and we talk with the people who run the work. You get the pattern behind your claims and a short list of what's worth fixing first.

From there our claims, HR, safety and fleet people work alongside yours, and you get a Score Card at the start and every year after, measured against your own starting point.
