School District Improves Its Focus on Safety and Injury Management and Cuts Premium 45%

Rising injuries had doubled this district's premium. Better screening, transitional duty and district-wide education turned it around.

The business

School district with a staff of 775, including teachers, bus drivers, maintenance, administrative and many other job categories. Over 6,000 students enrolled in K-12.

The situation

The district was seeing more injuries and more lost time injuries, and its premium had doubled.

What we found

The Risk Management and HR Assessment showed injuries were coming from the expected areas, like maintenance and food service. They were also coming from areas not usually known for injuries, like the teachers.

What we did

We educated everyone in the district, from the top down and including the school board, on what injuries were costing them. That gave them a reason to focus on prevention. New safety processes and programs, along with better new employee screening that included functional capacity testing, helped bring injuries down. Working with the labor unions, we created and put in place a strong transitional duty program for injured employees. We also worked with their HR team to improve and add programs and training.

The result

45%

Reduction in premium

The district's annual average dropped to 28 injuries over the past four years, from 62 in the four years before, and the trend is still improving. Lost time cases went from an average of 10 a year to 4. That made the district more attractive to insurance companies and cut its premium by 45%.

Where the Employer Success Program comes in

It starts with a Diagnostic and Plan. We read your loss runs, your mod worksheet and your key contracts, and we talk with the people who run the work. You get the pattern behind your claims and a short list of what's worth fixing first.

From there our claims, HR, safety and fleet people work alongside yours, and you get a Score Card at the start and every year after, measured against your own starting point.
