Home Health Care Company Reduces Modifier 39% and Premium 59%

Caregivers were getting hurt in their first weeks on the job and in unsafe client homes. Fixing hiring and home safety changed everything.

The business

Home health care company with more than 200 employees.

The situation

The company was averaging 16 injuries a year and $211,300 in claim costs. Its experience modifier had climbed to 1.516, and it was offered a renewal premium of $421,000.

What we found

The Risk Management and HR Assessment pointed to a few things. A significant number of injuries happened in a new hire's first few weeks, which pointed back to hiring. Many injuries came from conditions in clients' homes that made for unsafe working environments. And the company believed it had no way to bring injured employees back to work.

What we did

We provided comprehensive services, including risk management, Behavior Based Safety, OSHA compliance, human resources and claims handling. We set up a pre-employment screening process with a fitness for duty exam, put in a drug free workplace program, created a new home safety checklist with a process for dealing with unsafe environments, and facilitated a formal safety committee. We also set up a frequent repeater program and a Zero Lost Time Program that uses an alternative workplace program.

The result

$421,000 to $172,000

Renewal offer versus premium after the program

Injuries went to 10, then 5, and for the last four years the company has had 1 or 2 a year. Claims costs have averaged $14,100 a year over those four years. The experience modifier fell to 0.925 and premium came down to $172,000.

Where the Employer Success Program comes in

It starts with a Diagnostic and Plan. We read your loss runs, your mod worksheet and your key contracts, and we talk with the people who run the work. You get the pattern behind your claims and a short list of what's worth fixing first.

From there our claims, HR, safety and fleet people work alongside yours, and you get a Score Card at the start and every year after, measured against your own starting point.
