Electronics manufacturer with 110 employees and gross revenues of $30 million.
The situation
After splitting from a large national manufacturer, the company saw its experience modifier jump to 1.45. That made its labor costs uncompetitive and cut into profitability.
What we found
The Risk Management and HR Assessment found the mod increase came from more severe repetitive injuries to hands and wrists, a result of the light assembly work. The mod was also being pushed up by lingering claims and by the company relying too much on the insurance company to manage claims after they happened. The company had no return-to-work procedure and no 24-hour claim reporting requirement.
What we did
The focus was on lowering the severity of the hand and wrist injuries and getting better outcomes on the lingering claims. We set up an occupational clinic relationship with pre-employment testing, including grip testing, to head off future claims. A clinic relationship was also put in place for existing claims. We set up a return-to-work process and made sure the clinic knew light duty was available, which meant early intervention, the right treatment and a faster return to work. We trained supervisors on 24-hour reporting and on how workers' compensation affects the employer's costs, and started regular safety training. We also worked with management to show them how much money the process would save.
The result
$85,500
Premium savings over three years
The lingering claims problem has been eliminated, and the outcome on severe claims has dropped from $35,000 to $6,500. Premium savings came to $85,500 over three years.
Where the Employer Success Program comes in
It starts with a Diagnostic and Plan. We read your loss runs, your mod worksheet and your key contracts, and we talk with the people who run the work. You get the pattern behind your claims and a short list of what's worth fixing first.
From there our claims, HR, safety and fleet people work alongside yours, and you get a Score Card at the start and every year after, measured against your own starting point.
